After 13 years of admissions and recruitment experience traveling in the Southeast, the West Coast and the entire state of New York, I remained close to home this year and learned about the many wonderful, diverse and talented students attending the various high schools in Nassau County (on Long Island).
I have really enjoyed the relationships I've begun to build with students who live so close that I can potentially run into them in the local community, visit them at their place of employment(accidentally or on purpose) in local retail stores and shops in the area, and also see them multiple times at their schools and at our various on-campus events. Long Island is a beautiful place and many of the students who live in the area don't always realize the high-quality education they have so close to home in such a suburban area with access to NYC and a great deal of amenities.
Having traveled away from the New York metropolitan area for most fall recruitment seasons, I find myself awed by the beautiful foliage and the picturesque fall days that are often depicted on college viewbooks.
A walk on our campus is as beautiful as those brochures will show, and I hope that our current students, busy as they may be with midterms and activities are not too busy to notice the changing colors of fall.
As the weather grows cooler and the days get shorter, we are getting ready to review applications over the coming days... applicants for Early Action I are the first group to go through the review process and these students will be setting the bar for the rest of the applicant pool.
Hofstra is experiencing the most exciting time in history, with a new medical school open this fall, another Presidential debate on the horizon (fall 2012) and a School of Engineering and Applied Science to be established. As an alumna of this great university, the incoming Class of 2016 has so much to look forward to and we cannot wait to begin offering admission... I'd better get my reading glasses ready.
