Throughout the school year, each of us here in the admission office is responsible for reading all applications that come from the states in which we travel. During the Fall semester, this might mean that some admission counselors are reading several thousand applications! With so many essays, letters of recommendation and other parts of the application to look through, you might wonder what makes one student in particular stand out.
For me, a student really stands out when I can see them going the extra mile to let me know how much they want to attend Hofstra. Very often, this takes the form of a great essay, ecstatic phone call or energetic e-mail about how they've always dreamed of going to Hofstra.
However, the best way to separate yourself from other applicants is t come visit the campus and make a point of meeting the person who will be reading your application.
This may seem like just another plug for getting students to visit the University, but it is by far the best way to help us put a face to a name. When I am able to recall you from meeting you at a college fair, campus visit or other event, it lets me see that not only do you want to come to the school, but that you want everyone else to know it as well! With Hofstra expecting more than 22,000 applicants this year, that simple fact can go a long way.
This year, when you are applying to college and universities across the country, know that personalizing your application can make a big difference. Enjoy the holidays everyone!
