Inspired by students' essays

As I read essays from this year's high school seniors, aspiring to gain admission to Hofstra's Class of 2016, I am quite inspired by the wisdom these students have gained already in their young lives (most have not reached the ripe age of 18 as of yet). I am reading essays that show a sophistication and maturity beyond their years. These young people have experienced many of life's blessings and some serious challenges, and come through trials, tribulations and rites of passage so much stronger and ready to lead.

Each day, I read an essay and am compelled to post something from what I have learned from my students on my personal Facebook. Thank you students for allowing me to plagiarize some of what you've written..and thank you for inspiring me! :)

Here's what I have learned so far from the class this year (early as it is, much more to come):

"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
"Start where you are, use what you have and do what you can".

"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live" (I learned that this is from Harry Potter, but a student connected the quote to her philosophy of life).

Can't wait to see what I can learn from my next batch of applications! Putting the reading glasses on and delving in to many more.

  1. That first quote is from Dr. Seuss, the second is Arthur Ashe, and the third is Dumbledore from HP :P
